2021 Blackjack Rosa

2021 Blackjack Rosa

Tasting Note:

Made from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Bright pink-crimson colour. Vibrant, with strawberry/ cranberry nose, and spice. Full, yet crisp on the palate. Plenty of fruit as well. Good palate weight, mouthfeel, and a lingering finish. Perfect with crispy skin salmon.

Many would know the story of Blackjack, but it bears repeating here because it is where the name “Rosa” comes from. The 2018 Rosa is the second vintage.

Blackjack was an American sailor who jumped ship at Melbourne in the 1860’s to come to the Castlemaine Gold Fields, where he eventually settled. His actual name- from court records- was Santa Rosa Ramoy, hence the name.

It’s a pale coppery crimson in colour, it’s lovely to look at actually, and it throws lots of perfume too. It’s enticing from the outset. It offers a sophisticated array of smoked herb, spice and berried fruit characters before finishing dry and satisfying. It’s highly satisfying; highly successful. I just kept wanting to dive in for more.

You can count the number of rosé releases by Blackjack on one hand. After tasting the 2020, you wonder why the producers didn't start earlier. Lively copper/salmon in colour, it employs cabernet sauvignon to deliver flavour and elegance in the glass. Cherry, raspberry bon-bon with a fresh floral beauty. It boasts a supple, textural mouthfeel that is warm and inviting. You can tell this rosé comes from a couple of serious red wine makers.
