2016 Major’s Line Tempranillo
2016 Majors’ Line Tempranillo
On 28 September 1836, Australian explorer Major Thomas Mitchell stood atop what is now known as Mount Alexander, about 30 kilometres south of Bendigo, and liked what he saw: “A country fully as promising as the fine region we had left was embraced in my view from that point. I perceived long patches of open plain interspersed with forested hills and low woody ranges, among which I could trace out a good line of route for another fifty miles homewards.”
The “good line of route” he referred to headed back towards the Murray River. It became known as “Major’s Line” and led many squatters and settlers from the then-drought-affected grazing lands of southern NSW to more verdant pastures. The open plain immediately in front of him is now called the Harcourt Valley and is famed for its fine apples and pears, and increasingly for its premium-quality red grapes. It is the Harcourt Valley that is celebrated by BlackJack’s Major’s Line label.
With this wine we have extended the Major’s vision to include the Heathcote Wine growing area. On a good day arguably visible from Mount Alexander in Harcourt. Heathcote is about a 40-minute drive from Harcourt.
Made from Tempranillo grapes sourced from the Heathcote Wine Region of Victoria
The third release of this wine from Tempranillo grapes sourced from the Heathcote Region.
Fresh cherry, summer berries and spice on the nose, which follows onto the palate, but with a savoury edge and a slightly more tannic backbone in comparison to the 2015 vintage. Still a refreshing red wine.
Suggested Cellaring: 2-4 years
