Blackjack Wines

Blackjack Wines is a relatively young winery in the grand scheme of Bendigo's history, but it carries on the region's tradition of winemaking.

The Bendigo region has a surprising history with wine. After the gold rush of the 1850s, grapevines were planted throughout the area, with some records indicating over 900 acres dedicated to wine grapes by the 1890s. Unfortunately, a widespread outbreak of grapevine phylloxera wiped out most of the vineyards.  It was in the late 20th century that grape planting returned to Bendigo in a significant way.

Blackjack Wines was founded in 1988 by Ian McKenzie and Ken Pollock.  They planted their first vines on an old apple orchard in Harcourt and, over the years, have expanded their vineyard to focus on shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot grapes. Their Blackjack Shiraz was first released in 1994 and has won critical acclaim, including twice being awarded the trophy for Best Shiraz at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show.

The winery's name is a tribute to an American sailor who jumped ship during the Gold Rush era.  He made his way to the Castlemaine Goldfields, and though he may not have struck it rich in gold, his name lives on in the Blackjack Road that runs next to the Blackjack vineyard.
